>> president obama during the debate said he is the one who is going to raise taxes by letting the bush tax cuts expire. >> but we just played two things back to back that do not match. >> look, he said all look, 20% across the board. i think there were two different things he was speaking about there. he has a very pro-growth policy. he has a policy to create 12 million jobs. >> so are you saying he misspoke in one of those? >> i'm not going to get into whether he misspoke or not -- what i know is he has said all along, 20% across the board for everybody, and that means everybody. to what specifically he was speaking there, i'm not exactly sure. but it's a clear choice what you have. we don't need to get caught up on the back and forth. he is going to put forward pro-growth jobs. and 7.8% is an anemic recovery. that is nothing to celebrate. i remember when president bush was criticized by president obama when i worked for him -- >> but for the past four years, republican have said saying over and over and over, he promised 8%. and it's 7.8 now. >> the reason it's below 7.8% is because

if you're governor rom any, he did very well in the debates and i think president obama is a good debater, not a great debater, to be frank about it. but the expectations game and the reality of what he has to accomplish is he has to go out there and change minds. and he has to do it when the fact is, when this is republicans ignored. they know him. they don't like his policies. >> go ahead, joe. >> i think that chris makes a great point. the 1980, ronald reagan really changed the course of the debate and helped himself by saying to americans, think back, are you better off today than you were four years ago, is it easier to get a job, are there fewer of you that are unemployed and by getting the american folks to concentrate on that as opposed to how much they like president carter really helped. >> that's a variation of the question that the romney campaign has been asking for several months and the results that they're getting based on the polling is not the answer that the romney campaign wants. >> well style matters in the debate. think about ronald reagan. jimmy carter had a lot of

the obama campaign is making an effort to portray romney as having been dishonest in that debate? can that argument be effective when you're trying to reach some of these undecided voters who at this late hour are still in fact undecided. >> i think it's a mistake for the president. it sounds like sour grapes that he wasn't able to stand up to romney who was lying. that's a kind negativity. the president needs to tell what's he wants to do. one of the things was his own agenda was so thin, that he wasn't able to convey to the public that he had an offensive, a effective second term agenda. i think the second thing he has to do is he really has to bear down and answer some more detailed questions about his own agenda, about his own debt reduction plan, which as andrea mitchell pointed out that evening, really has a lot of holes in it. so i think he would be best to not complain about, not lambaste his opponent, but really kind of hit the books, get down to work, portray a more positive agenda the next time around. and for goodness sakes, look at the camera, don't look down. >> you

remember, mitt romney spent all those debates, the 23 where everybody said he won 19 of them debating within a pretty narrow window ideologically. barack obama has been dealing with people all across the spectrum, the house republicans in particular, for at least two years now. and when he is kind of tangling with the press, he is getting questions from all angles. so i think he is going to be okay. i know the white house is trying to downplay it and say how, you know, romney is -- the fact of the matter is i think obama needs to remind people what he has done. he needs to stay cool, calm, and collected. i think the challenge is we see romney being so robotic from time to time and saying these somewhat goofy things, the $10,000 bet, you know, i like firing people, those kind of things. and i think the challenge for obama is not frankly to pounce on those. he knows exactly what romney is going to bring at him. brett is right. i think romfully be respectful. but i think the challenge will be to counterpunch as effectively as possible. >> brett, gq wrote about the squ advice you gave rom
